Philippians 1:3-11: “Continue the Good Work”

Introduction to Philippians

  • Paul writes this book probably __________________________ into his captivity in Rome; that’s where we left him at the end of Acts.
  • Paul had not been around the church at Philippi for likely three to four years.
  • While in prison it says in ________________________“about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God , and the prisoners were listening to them .”

Philippians 1: 3-11

  • It's a blessing to think of the  __________________________
  • The church is a living picture of the __________________________
  • Christians love the church because Christ died for the church
  • We, the church, must not forget our ultimate calling

It's a blessing to think of the church

  • He's writing to a place where he was _____________________________ and thrown into prison, but his first thoughts about that location was that every time he remembers those people there, he thanks God.
  • _________________________________ “Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.”
  • Psalm 34:1 I will praise the Lord no matter what happens. I will constantly speak of his glories and grace.”

The church is a living picture of the gospel

  • Paul knew that God was in control.
  • He would see the work of the gospel come to full completion.
  • Paul knew that the lives that had been changed by the gospel were _____________________________ being changed.
  • If your hope for growing in Salvation is in your determination, your autonomous free will, then your hope is in the ______________________________ place friend.

Christians love the church because Christ died for the church

  • Paul is not owning his imprisonment as something he's doing by ______________________.
  • ________________________
  • 1 Corinthians 3:6-7
  • Paul's relating here, those folks are not only partakers of God's grace with him their partakers in that imprisonment that he is in.

We, the church, must not forget our ultimate calling

  • Paul begins to unpack just how he _____________________ for the church at Philippi.
  • Throughout the book of Philippians we see that one of Paul's major themes is that of _________________________.
  • His other theme is that of doctrinal love and _________________________.
  • Philippians 4:8-9
  • What does Paul want all this prayer to accomplish? “the glory and praise of God.”

Application

  • We must _____________________________ ourselves collectively where we have dropped the ball when it comes to forgetting our Calling to glorify God.
  • If there is __________________________ in this church it does not glorify God.
  • If we're all trying to pull things our way to get our way, then it is not ________________________ God.
