(Luke 16:19-31)

  • Scripture tells us that the rich man and the poor man named Lazarus both died (Luke 16:22).
  • Not only do they both die, Proverbs 22:2 says, that the rich man in the poor man have this in common, God is the creator of both.
  • The poor man goes to heaven and is embraced by Abraham(Luke 16:22).
  • The rich man dies and suffers in hell (Luke 16:23).
  • Then the rich man looks across the great divide into heaven, and he ask for mercy and for water and for someone to warn his family so that they can avoid this terrible place of torment (Luke 16:24).

4 key truths

1) Your position on earth does not determine your place in ______________________.

2) Existence __________________ after death.

3) Eternal destiny is __________________________  at death.

 4) There are many good things in Hell.

Your position on earth does not determine your place in eternity.

  • This is not a story that says, “Suffer in this life enjoy the next. Have great gain in this life suffer much pain in the next”.
  • This is not a Socialistic commentary on life. There were many wealthy followers of the LORD: Abraham, Job, Cornelius, Joseph of Arimathea , Zaccheus.

1 Timothy 6:17-19; 1 John 3:17; James 2:15-16

  • Jesus speaks often of the reality of hell.
  • The Bible speaks often of the reality of hell.
  • "come, you who are blessed by my father" (Matthew 25:34).
  • And then to the goats he says "depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41).
  • What is the difference?  Matthew 19:24; Romans 9:15-16

Existence continues after death.

  • Physical death is not “soul sleep”, Jesus shows us we are conscious after death.
  • The ‘Rich Man’ he _____________________ who he was and those that he knew.
  •  He even felt sorrow for their eternal state.
  • Eternal life-> look at how it is attached to the life of Christ, we will continue to go on beyond the grave.
  • But those whose life is not in Christ are _________________ from God’s grace; they exist in God’s complete ____________________.

John 14:2; Matthew 10:28; Matthew 22:31-32

  • Undying Worm and Unquenchable Fire Isaiah 66:22-24
  • Everlasting Life/Everlasting Contempt  Daniel 12:1-2
  • Eternal Fire/The Fire of Hell _____________________
  • Eternal Punishment/Eternal Life Matthew 25:31-46
  • Undying Worm and Unquenchable Fire _________________________
  • The Lake of Fire Revelation 20:10, 14-15

Eternal destiny is fixed at death.

  • You cannot go from one existence to the next.
  • There is no bridge between heaven and hell as some religions teach. Hebrews 9:27
  • God has revealed himself to ____________________ people, his word shows this, we have enough _______________________ of a divine designer that we will have to give an account of our relationship to that divine designer.

The disclosure of God in nature, in providential history, and in the moral law within the heart, whereby all persons at all times and places gain a rudimentary understanding of the Creator and his moral demands.’—Bruce Demarest and Gordon Lewis (1987)

  • _______________________
  •  Romans 1:19-21

There are many good things in Hell

  • Good people – Many who did nice moral acts
  • Good ___________________—The rich man being in torment lifted up his eyes and saw Lazarus far-off (Luke 16:23)
  • Good _______________________ —”father Abraham, have mercy on me" (Luke 16:23).
  • Good memory—”child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish" (Luke 16:25).
  • Good theology—The rich man realized that God exists. There are no atheist and hell.

____________________________ "everyone on the earth, everyone in heaven, and everyone under the earth will bow and say that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father."

  • Good priorities—Luke 16:37 "and he said, "then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.""
  • Good _______________________—Hell is full of people that never intended to go there. They had good intentions. They wanted to do good things. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
